The postures come threaded one after another and it is your breath that decides when you go to the next one.
To place in a special way. From the Sanskrit nyasa, to place, and vi, in a particular manner. Each posture sits in a thought-out order and links to the next in time with the breath: you inhale and open, you exhale and contract.
There is no fixed series here. The teacher builds the day’s class: sometimes you work toward a peak posture, sometimes the focus is hips, shoulders or balances. That keeps the body awake and takes the practice off autopilot.
La respiración que amarraThe breath that ties it together
Siempre. You breathe ujjayi: through the nose, with a soft continuous sound in the throat. That sound does two things. It keeps time, so you do not move faster than you can breathe, and it gives the mind something to hold on to. When the breath goes ragged, that is the signal to ease off, not to turn it up. Always.
Cómo se sienteHow it feels
The first few minutes are for settling in and from there the body finds its own rhythm. One posture leads to the next without giving you time to think about what is coming, so your head goes quiet and the body takes over. By the time you notice, you are halfway through.

De dónde vieneWhere it comes from
Vinyasa as we know it comes from the 20th century, from Tirumalai Krishnamacharya’s teaching in India and from his students, Pattabhi Jois among them. The idea of linking posture and breath was in Ashtanga; over the years it came loose from the fixed series and became what is now the most common way to teach a yoga class.
¿Para quién es?Who is it for?
For all levels. If it is your first time, every posture has variations so you can come in from where you are. If you have years behind you, the challenge is not getting ahead of your breath. If you are carrying an injury, say so when you arrive.
